History
Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Engineering was founded in 1977, based on the Section of Agricultural Mechanization separated from Faculty of Agricul¬ture, and the Section of Mechanics and Machine Exploitation, which changed name into Faculty of Production Engineering.
The Faculty’s tradition goes back to the earlier period, namely the forties of the XX century. There were the following stages in creating the Faculty: Section of Mechanics and Agricultural Machine Theory of Horticultural Faculty WAU, Department of Mechanics and Agricultural MachineTheory of Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Agricultural Mechanization and Institute of Agricultural Mechanization WAU.
The initial organizational structure of the Faculty had been changed several times. The last changes in Faculty’s structure took place in 2006.
At present, the functional structure of the Faculty is formed by three two-section Departments:
- Department of Agricultural and Forest Machinery (Sections: Farm Machinery, Forest Mechanization),
- Department of Production Manage¬ment and Engineering (Sections: Technical Infrastructure, Production Organization and Management),
- Department of Fundamental Engi¬neering (Sections: Electrical Engineering and Automation, Mechanics and Thermal Engineering).
All departments and sections are located in Warsaw at 164 Nowoursynowska Street. The Faculty’s premises include four main buildings with laboratory and scientific complex for agricultural machinery and equipment, lecture rooms and staff offices, as well as machine house with the vehicle testing station.
The Faculty employs at present 61 academic staff members, including 8 full professors, 10 associate professors, 2 assistant professors with D.Sc. degree, 41 assistant professors with PhD degree and 19 engineers, technicians and administrative staff.
Within 30 years of Faculty’s activity the Dean’s duties were performed by: Janusz Haman (1977-1981), Stanisław Pabis (1981-1987), Jerzy Więsik (1987-1993), Alojzy, Skrobacki (1993-1999), Czesław Waszkiewicz (1999-2005), and Andrzej Chochowski (since 2005).
Since 1987 the Faculty Board has been authorized to confer a PhD degree, and since 2005 a D.Sc. degree in the field of agricultural engineering. By the end of 2006, a PhD degree was conferred to 54 persons.
At present, the staff members conduct 10 scientific projects within their statutory activity and 3 own research projects.
The Faculty has been organized a series of scientific conferences, semi¬nars and symposiums on production engineering of key importance for the balanced development of the food production system and environmental protection, including renewable energy sources, recycling, production, ecology and utilization of bio-fuels, and others.
The Faculty has active cooperation with overseas academic and scientific centres, both of East and West Europe and of other countries. Such cooperation results in joint research projects, publications, and participation in scientific conferences.
Within didactic activity the Faculty offers two branches of full-time and extramural studies:
- Agricultural and Forest Engineering,
- Management and Production Engineering,
in the form of undergraduate and postgraduate studies of syllabuses in conformity with Bolonia Process.
In 2006 the PhD studies have been introduced in the field of agricultural sciences, discipline of agricultural engineering; 12 students were enrolled, to 8 of them the scholarships were granted.
Within the branch of studies Agricultural and Forest Engineering there are two specialties: engineering and computer science in agriculture, and engineering and computer science in forestry. Within the branch of studies Agricultural and Forest Engineering, apart from the courses of engineering, the curricula include: computer programming, computer support in decision making, systems engineering, automatic control, databases, random process analysis, automatics, hydraulic drives, agricultural building engineering, enterprise management, environment protection, general sociology, social communication techniques, quality management, ergonomics and labour protection, business and economic low, agro-business and special courses and électives.
Within the interdisciplinary studies of Management and Production Engineering the students take the following general courses: mathematics, mathematical statistics, general physics, chemistry, engineering graphics, introduction to engineering, meteorology, computer science, biology, environment protection, material science, general engineering design, thermal engineering, mechanics and strength of materials, ergonomics, general production of agriculture, forestry, horticulture, animal, food and their technological processes, storage of agricultural products, machines for agricultural, animal and forest production, electrical equipment and engineering, automatics, operational use of machines, general technical exploitation, systems engineering,
The very important and essential part of studies include economic courses: economics, enterprise economics and business organization, general management, personnel management, production and service management, quality management, strategic business management, accountancy, engineering cost analysis, finance and banking, operations research, philosophy, social communication, introduction to studying, sociology, marketing, negotiations, general agricultural and forest law, business and economic law, ergonomics and labour law. Postgraduate studies include compute support in decision making, small and medium size enterprise management, building engineering, extension and project management.
The number of students on particular study branches amounts to around 1700. During 30 years (1977-2006) over 2000 students have graduated from the Faculty, including over 1650 with M.Sc. degree, and the rest with B.Sc. degree.
The scope of knowledge transferred during studies to graduates of Faculty of Production Engineering WAU enables them to undertake jobs at such institutions as: inland and foreign scientific centres, high education institutions, specialized agricultural and agro-tourist farms, forest inspectorates, R&D forest centres, specialized institutions for production and distribution of agricultural, forest and horticultural equipment, and also for agricultural product processing, self-government and economic administration, agricultural extension centres, marketing firms, agricultural chambers, centres for continual and practical education.
At the faculty there is the Self-government Student Administration and also the Student Scientific Group, organizing scientific camps and excursions to scientific centres, as well as the Student Annual Scientific Conference, where the results of investigations carried out by the students are presented.
